Living in Ottawa in the winter can be an incredibly fun, exciting, and memorable experience if you know where to look! Here are some of our favourite winter activities that are headed to this part of Canada’s Capital.
Rideau Hall and Skating Rink
Head over to the Ottawa River-hugging neighbourhood of Rockcliffe Park, and you’ll happen upon Rideau Hall, the residence of the Governor General of Canada. A sprawling estate built on spacious grounds, the beautifully preserved old-world style of this area is the perfect complement to a fresh blanket of snow. Visitors can explore the interiors of the hall itself, which has received many a famous Canadian over the years. Discover the ballroom, complete with glimmering chandeliers, or the famous “tent room” that resembles a pink-and-white striped circus tent and is full of lovingly preserved Canadian artifacts. Afterwards, head outside to explore the tree-lined grounds to go snowshoeing, or head over to Rideau Hall’s skating rink and lace yourself up for some fun on the ice! It’s a wholesome and truly Canadian experience.
Rockcliffe Park Trails
After visiting Rideau Hall, why not explore the neighbourhood of Rockcliffe Park? There’s nothing quite like strolling down the quiet streets and seeing the beautiful heritage homes (and some incredible modern properties) on the way to the local parklands? This is a beautiful cliffside area that wraps around the point of Rockcliffe Park, intersecting with Green Island and Rideau Falls, and it is dog-friendly as well as full of walking trails, beautiful scenery, and plenty of places to rest while contemplating the winter wonderland around you. The area is incredibly peaceful, calm, and serene, giving you the opportunity to absorb the atmosphere and feel at one with nature in the parklands hugging the splendid suburbs of Rockcliffe Park.
It’s just a short bus ride away, and we wouldn’t forgive ourselves for not putting it on the list; Winterlude! This is Ottawa’s most popular wintertime attraction, located next to the ByWard market in the parks found alongside Parliament Hill. A truly magical and fun experience for all ages, this winter carnival host everything from ice sculpting, fine foods, and live concerts to all sorts of carnival games and child-friendly attractions. It receives thousands of visitors every year, and all in all, is considered the ultimate Canadian winter celebration! Don’t forget to head over to the Rideau Canal to go skating afterward, which is an unforgettable experience.
ByWard Market and the Rideau Canal Skateway
After discovering the lights, music, and carnival atmosphere of Winterlude, why not head over to the ByWard Market? A hugely popular winter destination full of cultural whimsy and charm, this eclectic shopping and dining destination hosts an ever-changing array of merchants who sell all sorts of unique gifts. Handcrafted treats, clothing, decorations and more await you! Grab a hot chocolate, enjoy a world-famous Beavertail, and experience a world of unique cultures all in one location filled to the brim with one-of-a-kind shops, boutiques, restaurants, and more! Taking a stroll through Riverain Park along the Rideau River is sure to bring you closer to nature without having to go far from home. With plenty of open space for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, this stretch of parkland alongside North River Road is a popular winter destination for those seeking to escape to the wonders of nature. With an abundance of trees and riverside walking paths, it’s a great escape for anywhere between five minutes and an hour. Bring the kids and your dog for plenty of fun in the snow!
Canada Aviation and Space Museum
If you’re yearning for a chance to warm up and still be thoroughly entertained, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Rockcliffe Park is an ideal solution (and a must-see if you haven’t been yet). The drive there takes you along quiet tree-lined roads that look particularly beautiful and Christmas-like with snow on the branches. Upon arrival from Aviation Parkway, you’ll discover a massive indoor display of some of the world’s most famous and iconic air and spacecraft, including the original Canadarm and one of the few surviving remnants of the Avro Arrow project. There are all sorts of fun activities and displays for children to enjoy, and the onsite gift shop and snack area are sure to satisfy before you head back outdoors! This is a great place for visits of several hours or more due to there being simply so much to discover and experience.
