Our Favourite Holiday Movies

Looking for some classic Christmas movies to curl up to with the family over the holidays? Here are a few of our favourite holiday movies that are guaranteed to rekindle some of the cozy and comforting nostalgia of the Christmas season that we all love.

A Christmas Story

It’s no surprise that A Christmas Story is played every single year on repeat right around the holidays. It is one of the most staple Christmas classics for snuggling up to and it’s the epitome of old-school Christmas nostalgia. It’s got it all – humour, relatable family moments, life lessons like never licking a frozen pole, and of course, that infamous leg lamp.

The Grinch

No matter which version you prefer, The Grinch is a must for the holidays. Our favourite holiday grump somehow makes the season feel a little more complete, and the heartfelt moments with the Whos and the classic Christmas music ties it all together.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Christmas time is all about being surrounded by family, and with that comes the moments we have to spend with the in-laws around the holidays. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation sums this all up perfectly with Chevy Chase reminding us that all families have their crazy moments, and we’re just lucky that they don’t compare to his.

Home Alone

It may have been 30 years since it first emerged, but Home Alone still takes the cake as one of our favourite Christmas movies. The McCallisters, the chaos, the music, and watching 8-year-old Kevin set booby traps to protect his home, bring us back to the glorious 90s every time we watch it.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

Charles Dickens’ classic tale about Scrooge never gets old, no matter how many versions there are. The Muppet Christmas Carol seemed to perfectly captivate this story with creative imagery, humour and comfort all wrapped up into a musical that’s entertaining for both kids and parents. It’s perfect for watching with the entire family and introducing the kids to this classic Christmas story.

The Nightmare Before Christmas

A blend of the heartfelt Christmas season combined with the darkness of Halloween makes Tim Burton’s epic tale one of the most imaginative out there.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

The cartoon characters of Charlie Brown, Snoopy and his friends take us along as they search for the meaning of Christmas and decorate their tiny tree. It’s a timeless animated tale that shows us how much the simple things really matter.

Plane, Trains and Automobiles

John Candy and Steve Martin pair up as a rival duo in Planes, Trains and Automobiles. As they’re both faced with hurdle after hurdle when trying to get home for the holidays, they create one tear-jerker of a movie, both for its comical and heartfelt moments. Always a great pick me up when you need a good laugh over the Christmas season!

The Polar Express

This animated adventure onboard the Polar Express takes us all on a ride to the North Pole that’s both exhilarating and magical. It’s a comfort to watch and it’s always a favourite with the kids.

They’re tiny, hairy, cute and terrifying all at the same time. When a fuzzy little gift is given, and rules are broken, the gremlins take over to cause mayhem. This weird and creepy flick still captivates us in a way that makes it part of our favourite holiday movies.

Miracle on 34th Street

Richard Attenborough was the original Kris Kringle that we fell in love with in the 1994 version. As he fights to defend his identity as the real Santa, he teaches us that miracles can happen. With another heartfelt plot, this became a perennial favourite movie to watch at Christmas time with the family.

Trading Places

A commodities broker and a street hustler cross paths when two very wealthy brothers place a bet to test out how each one will perform when their roles are switched. When the scheme is uncovered, they plot together to turn the tables. It’s a social satire that’s entertaining and satisfying to watch every year.

The Family Stone

With an A-list star-studded cast, the Family Stone brings us into their home as they sort through their family dynamics during the holidays. Another feel-good movie with many heartfelt lessons throughout.

The holidays are all about bringing back the nostalgic moments, and there’s no better way to do that than to dive into some of these classic holiday movies. Enjoy endless movie nights with your families in your Valecraft homes this holiday season.
