The Role of Hockey in Our Communities

It’s no secret that hockey is Canada’s favourite past time, but it’s also an important part of our communities here in Ottawa. From the Ottawa Senators, to the Ottawa 67’s, to the numerous Junior A and competitive B teams dotted throughout the city – it’s a sport we’re passionate about. If you have a big hockey family and plan to relocate to a new community in Ottawa, you’ll never be too far from a hockey rink or team to join. Our latest Valecraft communities are within close proximity to a number of local arenas and associations, offering a range of hockey lessons and opportunities for you or your kids. Here’s a snapshot of the communities that are big on hockey throughout the city.

Rathwell Landing

The charming community of Rathwell Landing in the Stittsville area is within minutes from some of the city’s best hockey arenas. It’s home to the Stittsville Minor Hockey Association, featuring a number of divisions for hockey players aged 4-19, and their own competitive team who plays in the Ottawa B League – the Stittsville Rams. Kids in this area (and their parents) can take advantage of the nearby arenas – Johnny Leroux, Richmond Memorial, Osgoode Arena, and Minto Recreation Complex. The Bell Sensplex, the practice rink for the Sens, is another option for getting in some rink time.

Deerfield Village

Deerfield Village, located just east of Blossom Park and the airport sits within the boundaries of the Leitrim Minor Hockey Association. Home to the competitive Leitrim Hawks, this association has teams geared for a range of ages, including IP, novice, atom, peewee, bantam, midget, and juvenile. The associations also have a number of major and minor Rep B teams for those looking for more advanced play. The Leitrim teams can be found at the Barrett Arena, Richcraft Sensplex, Earl Armstrong Arena, plus the Senecal Rink at the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex in Orleans.

Place St. Thomas

If you’ve just moved to the quaint community of Place St. Thomas in Embrun, there’s a minor hockey league and Ottawa B team called the Casselman-Embrun IceDogs. With divisions ranging from Initiation up to Midget, and a number of hockey camps through the CIH academy, there are plenty of opportunities for your kids to hit the ice. Most Embrum hockey games are played at Aréna d’Embrun, Vankleek Hill Community Centre, and J.R Brisson Complex in the area.

For those looking to move to a neighbourhood that’s close to major amenities, restaurants, schools, recreational facilities and of course, hockey arenas, our Valecraft communities are a perfect choice. Come see for yourself today by arranging a community tour with one of our reps.
