Things to Do in Ottawa: August 2019

Do you call one of Valecraft’s Ottawa condos home? Or, have you purchased one of our finished houses for sale in Embrun and recently moved in? If so, you’re probably looking for ways to enjoy the beautiful summer weather while having fun exploring the National Capital Region. Well, the Valecraft team has you covered – we’re bringing back our monthly series on local events!

Let’s dive right in and see what’s on offer for the month of August.

Fanaticcon Ottawa (August 11)

Ready to entertain your anime, comic, or gaming obsession (or keep the kids entertained)? Unleash your inner Spider-Man and swing on over to Fanaticcon Ottawa, taking place at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre on Coventry Road. It’s a gigantic event that celebrates all things pop-culture. Shop for a new collectible trinket based on a favourite movie or anime show, fight for the crown in an old-school arcade competition, grab a fresh brew at the onsite bar, enjoy plenty of fun contests, and much more. What’s more, kids under 12 get in for free! Get your tickets today but be quick, as quantities are limited.

Curd Festival (August 14-18)

Did you purchase one of our beautiful houses for sale in Embrun? We bet you’ve been told by the locals to head over to the iconic Fromagerie Saint-Albert cheese factory nearby. Well, it’s about to celebrate a milestone birthday – 125 years – in style with its fun-filled Curd Festival. Discover live music from popular local acts, enjoy a delicious barbeque and bingo – complete with $5,500 in prizes – or zoom around in a go-kart. There’s also BMX acrobatic shows, an incredible amount of children’s programming including francophone folk singers, and much more.

Oh, and did we mention free cheese curds for almost every single event under the Big Top tent? What’s not to love? Purchase your tickets in advance while they’re still available.

Ottawa Greekfest (August 15-25)

Ever-popular and ever-delicious, Ottawa Greekfest is coming back! Enjoy 11 full days of authentic Greek culture, including stunning musical performances and, of course, some of the best Mediterranean food in town. You can even learn to speak a little Greek with the help of handy and fun language lessons, and the kids are sure to love such a unique, fresh experience. You can find the festival at 1315 Prince of Wales Drive, making it easily accessible from Valecraft developments such as our collection of Ottawa condos at Deerfield Village.

Westboro Fuse (August 17-18)

Westboro Fuse is one of the eclectic neighborhoods’ most vibrant and exciting events. Hop the bus or drive out with the family to experience a weekend-long street party unlike any other. From great beats to great eats and showcases of local talent, it’s a true celebration of the area itself. And don’t worry if you’re concerned whether it’s suitable for kids – there’s plenty of fun, family-friendly programming and interactive entertainment options for everyone!

Capital Fair (August 16 to 25)

What are you and the rest of your household in the mood for? How about taking in a demolition derby, watching incredible (and adorable) stunt dogs perform, playing carnival games, or taking the kids to a fun-filled petting zoo? Add an enormous, glittering midway of rides, vendors and more, and you get the Capital Fair.

That’s right, it’s time for the biggest annual August event in Canada’s Capital – a hugely popular way to cap off the summer! If you’ve never been or didn’t get to see it all last year, you’re in for a real treat: From monster trucks to medieval fairs performances and street dance battles, this sprawling carnival has a seemingly never-ending list of events taking place onsite during its 10-day run. There are also over 30 rides and attractions that loop, zoom, soar, and spook, covering all ages and preferences for intensity. Gate admission is only 5 dollars, but you might want to consider grabbing a pass or bracelet to enjoy everything at one superior value. Don’t miss out on this one!
