Things to Do in Ottawa: December 2018

It’s time to say farewell to 2018 and prepare for a new year of memory-making and adventures! Even though it’s cold, snowy, and all-too-tempting to stay stuck inside with a hot cup of tea and a good book, this is the time of year when Ottawa has all sorts of festive and fun events on offer! Let’s take a look at local events happening this December to help you celebrate the end of the year!

Christmas Concert by Candlelight (Dec. 15)

Live in the Stittsville area or in our very own Rathwell Landing community? Take a trip into nearby Carp for a unique Christmas concert experience — by candlelight! Held at the Trinity Presbyterian Church on Richardson Side Road, this event is set to be a unique presentation, with classic holiday compositions such as Ave Maria and the Nutcracker suite performed amidst the glow of candles by the string ensemble Ambitus. Admission is $30 cash on a first-come, first served basis. Bring your little ones as well as some cushions to sit on and prepare for a more traditional, elegant way to celebrate the holiday season.

Metcalfe Christmas Market (Dec. 6–16)

The Originals Ottawa Christmas Craft Sale is headed to the EY Centre this December! Plan your visit and enjoy meeting over 200 of Canada’s finest artists, artisans, and designers, not to mention shop ‘till you drop in one of Ottawa’s largest Christmas craft markets. From pottery to beautiful glassware, leather, gourmet foods and treats, jewellery, and much more, there’s sure to be something for everyone to enjoy and possibly bring home. The market is on for ten days and admission is just $7, so be sure to swing on over for a bit — it’s shaping up to be a great event.

Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy — A Celtic Family Christmas (Dec. 16)

Ottawa’s newly renovated National Arts Centre is a great place to take in live music over the holiday season, and whether you live in Ottawa South, East, or otherwise, you’d be hard-pressed not to find your way downtown on occasion. So, why not take in an intimate and truly unique Christmas concert series at the NAC? Join legends Natalie MacMaster and Donnell Leahy for an evening of brilliant Celtic Christmas tunes and merrymaking. This is a popular event, so be sure to snag tickets while you can. For fine fiddle music and the perfect date night, it’s a great solution. Some of our team are huge MacMaster and Leahy fans, so they probably won’t be missing this one!

Alight at Night (Nov. 30 – Jan. 5)

Want to take part in Eastern Ontario’s biggest outdoor light festival? Well, bring yourself and the kids on over to Upper Canada Village for their annual Alight at Night event! Stroll through the wintry wonderland setting, lit by over a million brilliant lights, for the ultimate outdoor experience this holiday season. This is an excellent event for families eager to do something a little different this year, and a great way to unwind with loved ones over hot chocolate and an evening stroll. Enjoy horse-drawn carriage rides, shopping at the traditionally-inspired Village Store, and dining at the popular Harvest Barn amidst the glow of a sea of Christmas lights.

Bell Capital Cup (Dec. 27 – 31)

Prepare to cheer and enjoy some action on the ice — the annual Bell Capital Cup returns in its 20th iteration. The world’s premier youth hockey tournament is coming back for all sorts of excitement and fun, with players from the United States, Europe, and Canada participating. Open to youth teams aged 9 to 13 from around the world, this Guinness World Record-winning tournament generates hundreds of thousands of dollars in proceeds towards funding local minor hockey programs. Take in a game or three and help ring in the holiday season in the most Canadian way possible!

Whether you want to find new ways to make memories with the kids or are yearning for that perfect romantic date night solution, there’s something great on offer.
