Things to Do in Ottawa: December 2019

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for Valecraft homeowners and Ottawa residents alike! Bring on the festive cheer, excitement in the air, parties and good times with those who mean the most to us. December in the Ottawa area is a magical and unforgettable experience thanks to the holiday season being in full swing. However, what is there to actually do out in that winter wonderland? As it turns out, a whole lot!

Let’s take a look at some great things to do in Canada’s Capital this month – there’s something fun for every lifestyle and type of household just waiting to be discovered.

Embrun Christmas Bazaar (Dec. 15)

Recently moved into one of our homes for sale in Embrun at Place St. Thomas and want to spread some holiday cheer – and maybe decorate that tree you’ve just put up in your spacious living room? The Embrun Christmas Bazaar is a wonderful place to find handmade ornaments, fresh baked goods aplenty, and other homemade items sure to fit right in with your holiday décor. We’ve stopped by ourselves a few times, and there’s just no saying no to a few gingerbread cookies, hot apple cider and browsing the wares of these festive vendors. Swing by with the family and make a day trip out of it on December 15th!

Digi60 Filmmakers’ Festival (Dec. 20-22)

Are you a film buff, or do you know someone who is? The Ottawa Art Gallery’s Alma Duncan Salon is hosting the 2019 Digi60 Filmmakers’ Festival, and it’s a can’t-miss celebration of the medium. Discover breathtaking new short films, register for workshops and panels galore, and develop a deeper understanding of the works of local filmmakers from Ottawa and Gatineau. If you’re looking for an exciting event that isn’t holiday-themed, this is your ticket! Speaking of which, advance ticket quantities are limited, so be sure to snag yours before they’re gone.

Christmas Craft-ernoons (Until Dec. 22)

Take the kids over to the Bytown Museum along the Ottawa River, and introduce them to amazing traditional Christmas handicrafts. The Christmas Craft-ernoons held there on most weekends this month are sure to entertain and excite, showing what the holidays in Canada’s Capital were like a century ago. Plus, you’ll get the chance to make new friends and share that holiday cheer in an inspiring setting!

The Haunted Walk’s “Nightmare Before / After Christmas” (Until Dec. 30)

Who says ghouls and ghosts only come out at Halloween? Ottawa is an old city rich in even older and more mysterious tales. Let the Haunted Walk’s special Nightmare Before / After Christmas experience guide you through a series of creepy Christmas-themed ghost stories! Most of the tour takes place in the Bytown Museum – one of the city’s most haunted buildings. It’s a frightfully fun night, plus you’ll have a chance to win some great prizes! Of course, be sure to book your spots now – this specific haunted experience only comes around during the holiday season.

Ottawa Christmas Market (Dec. 13-15, 20-22)

The biggest and most popular of its kind in the area, the Ottawa Christmas Market is a sight to behold. Head over to the newly renamed Casino Lac-Leamy Plaza at Lansdowne for special performances including live music, local crafts and baked goodies, and much more! Whether you’re obsessed with filling out your candle collection or eager for a brew with old friends surrounded by holiday lights and music, this is one celebration of Christmas in Ottawa that you need to try at least once. That said, we wouldn’t be surprised if you come back again and again – there’s just so much to see and do, and you never know who else might sign up as a vendor!

Ottawa New Year’s Eve Celebration (Dec. 31)

Lastly – and speaking of celebrations – why not say farewell to the 2010s at an extra-special extravaganza? New Year’s Eve in Canada’s Capital already sounds like the ultimate experience, so ramp up the excitement even more at Ottawa’s New Year’s Eve Celebration. Presented by Jump 106.9, this party brings it all; great food and plenty of drink, live performances, DJ sets, midnight champagne, and confetti galore!
