Things to Do in Ottawa: October 2019

Spring has sprung, summer has sizzled, and now fall is set to fascinate in Canada’s Capital! Whether you’re surrounded by a sea of colourful trees in Embrun or taking advantage of those last few warm days in town by strolling around Stittsville, October 2019 is set to be the ultimate send-off to the nicer weather. Let’s dive right into this neatly raked pile of events and see what’s brewing in the cauldron this month.

Ottawa Butterfly Show (Oct. 5-13)

Live in Deerfield Village and want to find a fun, free event for the family to enjoy? Bring them over to the Nesbitt Biology Building at Carleton University for the annual Ottawa Butterfly Show! Lasting for nine days leading up to Thanksgiving weekend, come face-to-face with over 1300 live exotic butterflies, released into the building’s greenhouses! It’s a colourful way to admire and develop a new appreciation for nature, and the kids are sure to love it.

Celine Dion: Courage World Tour (Oct. 15-16)

Whether you drove all night to get here from across Ontario or just don’t want to be taking chances on finding tickets, Celine Dion’s Courage World Tour stop in Ottawa is a can’t-miss event. For two almost-sold-out nights at the Canadian Tire Centre, experience the latest chapter in the beloved Canadian icon’s saga live in full force. Her first international tour in many years – and the first since the passing of husband and manager René Angélil – the show is set to spotlight her timeless hits and incredible, deeply personal tracks from the upcoming Courage album (we’ve been playing her brand-new ballad, “Lying Down,” on repeat). Grab those tickets while you still can!

Ottawa Rock N’ Gem Show (Oct. 24-27)

With a whopping 41,000 kilograms of the finest specimens available for sale, the Ottawa Rock N’ Gem Show is polishing itself to be a real stunner of an event when it hits the town later this month! Discover one-of-a-kind pieces from countries around the world including Bulgaria, Morocco, Uruguay, Brazil, and yes, Canada! Whether you want to bring home a glimmering conversation piece or simply snap photos of the amazing pieces available, it’s sure to be a gem-tastic time.

Fall Rhapsody (Oct. 5-27)

We mention Fall Rhapsody every year because it is essentially a rite of passage for local residents; you simply must experience the fall colours of Gatineau Park at least once! Take a shuttle bus or a leisurely drive out – and be mindful to get there extra early as it can get packed – and you’ll be treated to a natural spectacle. Surround yourself with vibrant orange, red, and yellow hues amidst a crisp-yet-comforting fall breeze! Whether you discover lakes, hidden ruins, or perhaps a great stop for tea at the Mackenzie King Estate, you’re sure to fall in love with the sheer beauty and serenity of this area.

Acres of Terror at Cannamore Orchard (Until Oct. 30)

What’s a list of October events without something spooky, kooky and… terrifying? That’s right, Acres of Terror at Cannamore Orchard is back for another round of frights in the night! Now in its 27th year, this spine-tingling event is just a short drive from Valecraft’s own Place St. Thomas and homes for sale in Embrun. Discover a spooky wagon ride with over 30 creepy monsters waiting for their moment to catch you off-guard, a haunted house/funhouse combination that’s sure to terrify, a fully interactive spooky village complete with fortune-telling and coffin shops, and a sprawling indoor fog maze that gives the hedge maze from The Shining a run for its money. If you’re worried about whether it’s too intense for the kids, don’t worry – family-friendly days are offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

As for the rest of us… well, let’s hope the vampires and ghoulies aren’t feeling particularly snackish.

Pumpkinferno (Until Oct. 27)

Even if you went last year, Pumpkinferno is always changing! The award-winning celebration of pumpkin-carved art is set to glow in a whole new way with unique displays unlike any other. Fun for all ages and containing over 7,000 handcrafted pumpkins (think of how many pies that could make afterwards), you’re sure to be mesmerized and inspired. Buy your tickets online as they need to be purchased in advance – there aren’t many left!
