Things to Do in Ottawa: September 2019

It’s that time of year again – the kids are on the school bus and out of your hair, Starbucks is selling pumpkin spice drinks once again, and the leaves are on the verge of changing in some parts of town. Yes, fall is almost here! This is no time for mourning the end of summer, however – the weather is still beautiful, and Ottawa is ripe with fun-filled events for the whole family. Let’s take the time to explore what the National Capital Region has to offer this harvest season – we’re certain you won’t be disappointed.

Ottawa Porchfest (Sept. 7)

Live in our Deerfield Village community? You’ll want to head over to the annual free arts festival that is Porchfest – it’s just a short drive or bus ride away! Experience a refreshing twist on live music, art and interactivity with locals – events are held on residential and business porches throughout Hintonburg, Little Italy and Wellington Village. From poets to actors, musicians, and more, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Swing on by and stay awhile.

Russell Agricultural Fair (Sept. 5-8)

If you call Valecraft’s Place St. Thomas in Embrun home, country life is likely pretty important to you! Therefore, don’t miss out on the Russell Agricultural Fair – it’s a great way to unwind and hang out with friends and neighbours. From truck pulls to horse shows, carnival games, blacksmithing demonstrations and more, events here offer great entertainment while highlighting the charm of countryside living! Stop by, sample local crafts and harvested goodies, and enjoy the autumn breeze with your loved ones.

CityFolk (Sept. 12-15)

With a lineup featuring masterful musicians such as Rhye and even iconic Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin fame, this year’s iteration of CityFolk is shaping up to be an unforgettable one. Take to the sprawling, welcoming atmosphere of Lansdowne Park and enjoy a show – or three – with a single-day or festival pass. Or, go for the pick-2 pass, which allows you to choose any two full days of the festival to attend. That way, you get to see all your favourites! Previous standout performances here include a rare show by Amanda Marshall (our jaws are still on the floor from that one), UB40, The Sheepdogs, and many more, so you’re sure to be in good company in the heart of the Glebe. These folks know how to run a good music festival, so don’t miss out.

Terry Fox Run (Sept. 15)

The annual Terry Fox Run is synonymous with September in Ottawa. Everyone is welcome to participate, and don’t forget that you can run at your own pace! If you’re interested in raising funds for Terry’s cause, you can do so online, via a pledge sheet or through donations at the run itself. This year’s run begins at Anniversary Park near Carleton University, follows the Rideau Canal up to Pretoria Bridge, then loops back down. Whether you want to help keep the kids active or are excited to contribute to a worthy cause, this is a great event that always draws huge crowds. Don’t forget that water bottle!

Beau’s Oktoberfest (Sept. 20-21)

Who doesn’t love a good Oktoberfest celebration? If you’re itching to get your hands on some fresh Bavarian cuisine and a great brew, Beau’s Brewery has you covered at their Oktoberfest in Vankleek Hill. It’s well worth the short drive from the city! With live music from major artists such as Jenn Grant and Shad, you’re sure to catch a great show here. Plus, there are activities the whole family to enjoy, traditional Bavarian entertainment, educational seminars, and much more! Shuttle buses leave from Ottawa, Montreal, and Cornwall for those who plan on sampling Beau’s many refreshing brews on tap.

Carp Fair (Sept. 26-29)

The 156th Carp Fair is here, and locals in Ottawa West and Stittsville (including Valecraft’s own Rathwell Landing) can’t wait to hit the midway. With a demolition derby, horse shows, tractor parade, and a large midway of games and rides, it’s sure to be an entertaining time! In fact, the Carp Fair has become a popular way for many locals to welcome fall – it’s essentially a tradition for many. Why not join in on the festivities, making some endearing memories with family and friends?
