We sat down with one of our top interior designers, Valerie Gendron, to get the inside scoop on how to choose the right design and décor features for your new home, what styles and pieces homebuyers are choosing for 2017, and what trends she expects will last!
Q: What are some of the most popular new home décor trends you see making a splash in 2017?
A: There are quite a few trends I expect to see make a splash in 2017. First, I expect to see a lot more black steel and burnished metals taking over the home. This coming year will be about embracing the beauty of aged metals in furniture, hardware, and fixtures.
Stemming from 2016’s popular bar cart trend, homeowners will look for a more permanent solution for entertaining within their home. From built-in shelving for craft cocktail fixings, to a small bar seating area, homeowners are enjoying decorating and hosting more classic parties and will seek ways to make these spaces more of a focal point within the home.
Saturated colours like emerald green or sapphire blue will take centre stage in 2017. From artwork to furniture, these vibrate hues will be popping up everywhere, bringing life and richness to homes.
Velvet is expected to make a big splash in interior design this year. Look for velvet fabrics and textures to weave their way into anything from throw pillows to upholstered couches and curtains. Marble-style materials will also become an increasingly popular material and motif for countertops, flooring and tabletops.
Q: What trends are making a comeback after years (or decades) past?
A: The 90’s aren’t just coming back in clothing trends – they are coming back in home décor trends as well! Some of these trends, just to name a few, are pastel colours, light floors, wallpaper, minimalist decor, gold fixtures and more! But you don’t have to worry about it looking like your parent’s house – these design trends are coming back in a modern, fresh way.
Q: Which home décor trends do you think are here to stay (at least for the foreseeable future)?
A: We have experienced many home décor trends over the recent years that have serious staying power. Some of these trends include white kitchens, quartz countertops, flush island countertops (not raised or lowered for seating), large and deep one-bowl kitchen sinks, stainless steel appliances, wood or wood-style tiles in kitchens, and more.
Q: What is generally the hardest décor and design decision for new homebuyers?
A: One of the hardest things to do when buying a new construction home is picturing the finished product. That is why creating a Houzz or Pinterest account with your partner, featuring your structural, design and décor preferences is a very good idea! This helps you and your partner understand each others’ taste and also makes it easier for your designer to understand your taste.
